baby nursery

Next week I am painting a baby nursery! The theme is jungle animals and the drawings are based on the bed spread for the crib so that they will match. I am painting on two walls with a window on each.

Here is an image of some of the animals.

Or check out this link to the Babies R Us site for more images.

I am so happy and thankful that my mom could borrow a projector from work so that I can easily enlarge the drawings and transfer them on the wall.
I will post progress when I get started next week!

windows

oil

While out on a photographing adventure I came across a simple building with great character. I assume that a storm swept through the building and forced all of the windows out, shattering the glass and leaving the shards on the sidewalk below.

blog action day

Today is blog action day. A day to discuss the environment.

What I have to say is simple.
Recycle.

Shortly after moving to this city I was cooking... something and I turned around to dispose of the can in, say, a container set aside for recyclable items. Why I assumed there'd be one in my kitchen, I don't know. So I asked my roommates what we should do, where we should take it. The reply was something like "recycle? Oh, we don't recycle here haha." I was basically knocked off my feet. So sadly I went about the last few years, not really doing a thing about it. Sometimes I would take stacks of paper home and recycle it there.

There is no curbside recycling service and I believe that laziness has set in to us all. So I've been researching and oh my goodness there are recycling centers in Detroit. It just requires a little time in the day to stop by and drop off your plastics, papers, etc.

So let's not be lazy.
Let's find a solution.
Let's care about the environment.

Also, my roommate is all about bringing her own cloth bags to places such as the Eastern Market instead of getting plastic bags over and over, only to dispose of them later. I absolutely love this idea and I think more people should consider doing this.

Care about the Earth. We live on it.

The image above is something I created in my sketchbook as a quick idea and experiment. I am in the process of re-creating it at a larger and presentable scale. I like the spontaneity in this image which I am trying to incorporate in the larger piece. I am also working on developing more content within the piece.

Somerset

This past week I have been involved in a project with the illustration department and the Somerset Mall. They have costumes from movies on display at the mall and we have been going there to draw all week. I had a lot of fun using pastels. Below are some of my drawings. The actual work is about 18" x 24" for each dress. The company that makes the costumes is CosProp. They incorporate the finest detail, which I love.

Blogging

Day one of the blog.
Hmm.

I have been working on a painting of George Harrison today. I'm giving the all new water mixable oils a try. No terpentine.. keep it safe. I'll post a picture of that one later.

Here is some recent artwork for now though.

A montage put together in photoshop. I painted the tree on a canvas, the bird on cardboard, and the other background images are cut paper, gesso, etc. I'd like to explore more with this.

My poster was chosen last May for Nathan and Eric's band Drake. The content was inspired by a specific song of theirs called Make Believe, which they would also like to make into a children's book. I am so excited to be their illustrator and I might make this my senior studio project for this semester.

I suppose that is all for now. Hopefully I will update this regularly and post current and in-progress work.
